The following photographs and accompanying text relate to the installation of a SuperChip undertaken by the authorised dealer on the 21st July, 2004.
This SuperChip was fitted to a Ford Ranger.
The vehicle, being sold, had to have all additional equipment removed and this is when the installation became visible.
After removing the plastic footwell cover the first thing you notice is the missing bolt from the cradle. This was presumably a similar bolt to the intact sheer-bolt that was not removed.
The front retainer has been cut away with an angle grinder leaving extremely sharp edges uncovered and scuff marks on the plastic housing.
Three wires connect the chip to the loom.
A further three wires have also been attached to, removed and then taped back up.
During setup you could hear the engine being held on the rev limiter for a few minutes at a time. I was assured that this was perfectly normal and would not cause any damage to the engine.
The Ranger's engine performs best at low revs. After fitting the chip the low rev performance was noticably down. The installer contacted the manufacturer who say there is another setting screw which can be adjusted.
It was intimated the additional twenty bhp should result in better fuel economy. This was not the case and resulted in a reduced economy by two mpg.
